Choquequirao Trek (5 Days/ 4 Nights)

Overview

Choquequirao is considered as Machu Picchu´s ‘Twin Sister’, and is connected to it by Incan trails that cross that part of the Andes. Therefore, it is a trek that crosses the Apurímac River Canyon, with villages, views towards beautiful glaciers, endemic flora and fauna, sightings of condors in flight, etc. So, accompany us on this unforgettable adventure that will take us to discover that great Incan llaqta (multifunctional urban center) that is still being researched and progressively free from the dense vegetation.

  • Day 5: Cocamasana – Cachora – Cusco

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Cachora – Chiquisca

This morning, we´ll pick you up at your hotel, at 4:30 a.m., to We leave Cusco at 5:00 am in the morning for the 4 hour drive to Cachora in our private transportation., On the way we will make a stop to enjoy our breakfast admiring the wonderful and amazing Limatambo Canyon, to the right the great Apu –Salkantay and Humantay Mountains, then we will continue to the little village of Cachora.

After meeting our expedition support crew know as arrieros we arrange our equipment on mules / horses we will be ready to start a soft hike through this unknow mystery and very historically rich territory. It is a 3 hours hike to Capuliyoc (2915m) from where we have our first beautiful views of the Apurimac valley stretching below. As well as the snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora. We then descend toward Coca Masana (2330m) where the climate

In the afternoon, we´ll be hiking, downhill, to Chikiska, where dinner and our campsite will be waiting for us.

Day 2: Chiquisca – Choquequirao

After a very early breakfast, we´ll get back on the downhill trail to Playa Rosalinas, where we´ll cross the powerful Apurímac River, to start ascending to Santa Rosa, for a rest and an optional tasting of some cambray which is a locally made sugarcane liquor. Then, we´ll go on, uphill, to reach the little village of Maranpata, where we´ll have lunch. In the afternoon, we´ll ascend all the way to our next campsite, near Choquequirao, at 2,850 m.a.s.l. If the group still has sufficient energy, we´ll visit the Incan architectural complex, before dusk, to take advantage of our free time, and a preliminary commentary from our guide. Otherwise, the guided visit will be for the following day.

Day 3: Guided Visit of Choquequirao

Today, we´ll have the opportunity to fully visit Choquequirao, given that we´ll be camping nearby, for yet another night. So, we´ll be able to explore every sector and corner of that amazing Incan city. Then, in the late afternoon, we´ll have the chance to sight great condors, in their majestic flight, as they soar-up the canyon, in search of prey.

Day 4: Choquequirao – Cocamasana

On this fourth day of the trek, we´ll start hiking, downhill, on the same path, passing by Maranpata, and descending to the Apurímac River, and ascending to Chikiska, where we´ll be able to take a fresh water shower, to relax from the heat. Afterwards, we´ll have lunch, and will go on, uphill, all the way to our campsite, in Cocamasana.

Day 5: Cocamasana – Cachora – Cusco

In the course of this last day, we´ll be hiking, uphill, for about 3 hours, to the Capuliyoc Vantage Point, to have a last look back and farewell to Choquequirao and the Apurímac Canyon. Then, we´ll go on walking, to reach Cachora, where we´ll share our last lunch, together with the agency´s staff, before goodbyes, and taking the bus back to the city of Cusco, where we´ll leave you at your hotel.
